International Day of Zero Tolerance to Female Genital Mutilation: Her Voice. Her Future

The International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is a crucial annual observance marked on February 6th, dedicated to raising awareness and advocating for the eradication of this harmful practice globally. This day serves as a platform for governments, NGOs, and individuals to celebrate achievements, address challenges, and emphasize the urgency of putting an end to FGM. The theme for 2024, “Her Voice. Her Future. Investing in Survivor-Led Movements to End Female Genital Mutilation,” underscores the vital role played by women-led and survivor-led organizations, particularly at the grassroots level.

Female genital mutilation is a pervasive human rights violation affecting millions of girls and women worldwide. Recognized internationally as a severe health risk, it can lead to infection, chronic pain, depression, infertility, and even death. Shockingly, there are over 200 million survivors of FGM globally, with approximately 4.4 million girls at risk in 2024 – an alarming statistic of over 12,000 girls each day. Without intensified efforts, projections indicate that this number may rise to 4.6 million in 2030 (UNFPA 2024).

Since 2015, I have been actively involved in the movement to end FGM in Africa. The International Day of Zero Tolerance to Female Genital Mutilation has become one of the busiest international observances for me. On this day, I am engaged in a series of back-to-back activities in Nigeria, both offline and online, to raise awareness, share information, and contribute to the ongoing efforts to end this harmful practice.

On this International Day of Zero Tolerance to Female Genital Mutilation, let us unite in amplifying survivors’ voices and investing in survivor-led movements. Together, we can work towards a future where no girl or woman is subjected to the physical, psychological, and human rights consequences of female genital mutilation. The collective efforts of governments, NGOs, individuals, and survivor-led organizations are crucial in achieving a world free from the dangers of FGM.
